The former party treasurer of Spain’s ruling Popular party has been denied bail and detained in jail ahead of a trial into how he amassed a fortune of up to €48m held in foreign bank accounts.

Luis Bárcenas, who worked within the Popular party over three decades, and has become the central figure in the most serious corruption scandal to involve the government of prime minister Mariano Rajoy, was sent to jail in Madrid by Pablo Ruz, National Court judge, after being identified as a flight risk.
