Alex Salmond struggled on Thursday to contain the fallout over the row about whether he lied to Scottish voters about EU membership, announcing an inquiry into his own behaviour.

The Scottish first minister defended himself against accusations from Labour and the Conservatives that he misled viewers when he appeared to tell a BBC interviewer that he had legal advice saying an independent Scotland could remain in the EU. Nicola Sturgeon, Mr Salmond’s deputy, admitted earlier this week that no such advice had been sought or given.
